Common Queries and Questions

What membership fees are there?
What membership fees are there?
In order to cover the running costs, the club charges £25 per year (free for juniors).
Is there an opportunity to enter in tournaments?
Is there an opportunity to enter in tournaments?
Yes. We run a yearly FIDE Rapidplay tournament every year in September.
Why is your club called Darnall and Handsworth when you are not located in these areas?
Why is your club called Darnall and Handsworth?
The club name was Darnall & Handsworth from the beginning, mainly because some of our members lived in Darnall and some in Handsworth. The first venue was the King's Head at Darnall. Dave Hodgett wanted the club to be called Darnall, Kings Head so that he could shorten it to DKH which were his own initials (David Kenneth Hodgett). After the Kings Head we moved to Darnall Liberal Club for about five years until they shut down. We actually lost all of our equipment (sets, boards and clocks) when they shut down and we had to build up again by moving to Handsworth WMC. Interestingly Handsworth WMC used to have a team in the S&DCA back in the 1930s. In the future we may change our name not linked to a location.
Do I have to arrange my own transport when you play away?

On most occasions we arrange transport if you cannot go yourself.
I cannot play chess, is there someone who can teach me?
I cannot play chess, is there someone who can teach me?
Ofcourse! There are a range of players at different levels who would be more than happy
to teach you when we are not playing on match nights.
